The 18-story Federal Building is a landmark on the city skyline and a flagship complex for GSA in the region. Built in 1962 the tower stretches East and West across a two-block site, interrupting Cherry Street in the downtown grid.
The purpose of this 1.2 million square foot mid-century modernization was to reposition it as a Class A office. The challenge consisted of abating the building of asbestos and completely upgrading the building MEP, fire protection, and security systems, while the building remained nearly fully occupied. The project included a new south entrance, landscaping and security, public spaces and amenities, tenant spaces, and public art.
The project received a GSA National Design Excellence Award and is acknowledged as a standard against which all other projects of its size are to be measured.
The facility has been designed with considerable emphasis on improving the workplace office environment for the building’s 4,000 occupants.
