The new 100 000 sf. expansion is a vertical expansion and addition to the 1963 terminal 1. The project was a result of the winning design competition conducted by the Cairo Airport Authority in 1997. The project features a new transit hall, airline clubs, duty-free, and renovation of the existing 11 gates serving international flights. The main challenge of this project was to maintain all gates in operation during the construction of the new expansion. The project was completed and opened for airline use in 2002.
